Caracas Chameleons

Caracas changes. The city has been many things and The Almighty Ice found it mid-transformation. The Chameleons adapt every game—not figuratively. The opposing team does not know what they are facing.

  • City: Caracas, Venezuela
  • Arena: El Ávila
  • Capacity: 26,100
  • Colors: #C8A820 / #1A3A6B
  • Conference: La Conférence du Verglas
  • Joined: Season 3 expansion

The Chameleons adopt the visual profile of the visiting team. Pass interception rates surge. Le Council issued a memo about this. Nobody could find the memo afterward.

El Ávila presents the assessment team with the only arena it has actively declined to describe in full. The ice is of the verglas form—clear and hard, the lone example in its manifestation. Under the Camouflage designation, the Chameleons adopt the visual profile of the visiting team, and pass-interception rates surge accordingly: the opponent, in effect, plays against a mirror that keeps its own counsel. Le Council issued an internal memo regarding the safety of this. The memo could not, afterward, be located. Caracas has been many things. El Ávila declines to say which one you are playing tonight. So, for that matter, do the Chameleons.

Built against the mountain on the northern edge of the city, in raw concrete that was poured in place and has weathered to something close to the color of the slope behind it. From the valley the building is difficult to pick out, and the assessment team’s photographs of it, taken on four separate days, are not obviously photographs of the same structure. Inside there are 26,100 seats in a steep single sweep and a mountain wall as the northern boundary of the building—unfinished rock, lit from below, with cloud coming over the ridge and down into the upper tier for part of most evenings. The home dressing room has no fixed colors in it. Le Council’s assessment team requested a floor plan. Le Council’s assessment team was given one. Le Council has compared it to the building.
