Lore

Hockay is a hockey league sitting on top of a mythology that nobody in the league is willing to call a mythology. Le Council calls it a series of Unexplained Ice Phenomena and files reports.

The entities

• The Almighty Ice—the god of Hockay. Alive, intent-ful, and still spreading. It appeared in twenty places at once, then in twenty-eight more.
• The Puck—the Referee. The authority figure is the object everyone fights over. Speaks once a season, enciphered.
• The Jambono—resurfaces reality between periods and between seasons. Caretaker or corruptor. Nobody knows.
• The Sixth—the sixth dimension, behind the penalty box. Players who go there come back changed, or don’t come back changed, which is its own kind of information.

The world

• The conferences—verglas and givre, the two forms of ice. The Ice sorted the arenas. Le Council merely documented which side each was standing on.
• Graine Wetsky Arena—the forty-ninth building, poured from recovered ice in a jurisdiction the size of itself. The Ice did not raise this one.
• Glacified—the Hockay term for classified. Applies to a great deal.
• The commentators—JM calls every game and has never once acknowledged that anything about Hockay is unusual.

The institutions

• Le Permanent Council du Hockay—LPCHUIP. Half sports league, half paranormal investigation unit. Always Le Council, never The Council.
• Related organizations—O.D.D.S., H.O.R.N., A.P.S.P., S.L.U.S.H., T.R.A.D.E., R.I.N.K., the seated authorities O.F.F.R.E. and C.A.R.D., and the unrecognised O.M.E.N.
• Graine Wetsky Funds—the one institution Le Council does not own half of, and the only one that has ever surprised it.
• Stewardship—the Funds’ offer to every register, and the vote that answered it. Forty-six declined. Two did not.

The money

• Series H—the round that handed the equity to the fans.
• Series I—the round that printed four million more shares in every team, through a slot in a door.

Where to go from here

The lore is not decoration. Almost all of it is load-bearing: the entities produce modifiers, the institutions run the systems, and the petitions fans file turn into the next thing on this list.
