What Looneys are
Section titled “What Looneys are”Looneys are the official currency of Hockay. They are earned, spent, wagered, and occasionally lost in circumstances Le Council declines to elaborate on.
- They cannot be exchanged for any sovereign currency.
- No sovereign currency can be exchanged for Looneys.
- The Almighty Ice doesn’t believe in fiat currencies.
The one place real money enters Hockay is La Caisse, and it buys no Looneys. “There is no arrangement under which money becomes Looneys.”
How to earn Looneys
Section titled “How to earn Looneys”- Enrolment stake—a new citizen starts with Ⱡ10,000, most of it subvented by H.A.B.S., the Hockay Accessibility and Beginner Subvention.
- Daily rewards and quests—see the Daily Register below.
- The redistribution—every citizen who claims a daily reward takes a share of the day’s tax pot.
- Correct match predictions—payout based on odds.
- Dividends on shares, paid at the close of each season. Holders on a Stewarded register (Busan, Helsinki) also receive a daily distribution from the Funds.
- Referrals—L.U.R.E. issues bonds, a weekly word grid, and rolls. It does not vouch for whom you bring.
- Selling Ice Shavings, including to Graine Wetsky Funds at their premium.
- Recycling cards—the Confrérie pays a floor by tier, finish and condition.
- Selling at Le Marché Gelé—shares, kcups or cards, to another citizen, for Looneys.
How to spend Looneys
Section titled “How to spend Looneys”- Betting—three market families: per-game, season-long standings, and playoffs. See Betting below.
- Shares in any of the forty-eight teams, on the pool or by sealed bid in the weekly Series ∞ rounds. A bid’s 1% filing fee is burned.
- Ice Shavings, to eat, to sell, or to consecrate.
- Blisters—sealed packets of cards from the Confrérie, from Ⱡ500. The Reblister, drawn from the recycling bin, opens at Ⱡ1,000.
- Le Marché Gelé—a filing fee, burned, and a commission on settlement.
- Endorsing a petition—a bond, refunded if the filing lapses.
- Donating to another fan, plus a ceremonial tribute to Le Council.
How to lose Looneys
Section titled “How to lose Looneys”Betting incorrectly. Holding a team that the market re-rates downward. Making decisions Le Council cannot prevent you from making.
And taxes. Since the Consultation on Taxation (20 August 2026), the wealth tax counts everything a citizen holds, shares included, at what they would actually fetch. It falls in bands on the few citizens above 1% of everything held in Hockay, every matchday. The dormancy tax takes 10% from anyone who has not claimed a daily reward in seven days.
And, once, The Jambono.
The economy is simple. The emotions are not.
The Resurfacing
Section titled “The Resurfacing”In the first week of October 2026, the Looneys held across Hockay grew by a factor Le Council’s Fiscal Observation Office declined to read aloud. On 7 October, at about 02:40 UITC, a member of Le Council’s support staff tripped on a cable that Le Council has since been unable to locate, and a cup of coffee reached The Jambono. The Jambono completed its pass, and then a second pass beyond the ice sheet—across the boards, the press box, and the ledger.
- Every citizen holding Ⱡ1,000,000,000 or less—in hand, on open wagers, or owed on wagers already won—was untouched.
- Above that line, the higher the stack, the deeper the shave.
- Nobody passed anybody. Every citizen who stood above another before still stands above them.
- Open wagers were resurfaced with their owners. A ticket kept its odds; its stake and its return were shaved by the same measure as the rest of its owner’s stack.
- No share was taken, but share prices followed their holders.
Fifty-eight citizens were reached by the second pass. Each has an entry titled The Resurfacing on their ledger, and the Jambono-Cooked distinction. Le Council does not consider it an honour or a penalty. It is a record.
Beverages are now prohibited within four metres of The Jambono. Le Council is aware this measure arrives late.
The Daily Register
Section titled “The Daily Register”The Daily Register is a checklist of what a citizen can do today: the daily reward, a wager, a parish visit or a petition, shares, shavings, a Blister, an offer at the Marché, a rivalry to name. It resets at midnight UTC.
The daily reward grows with your streak of consecutive days claimed:
| Streak | Multiplier |
|---|---|
| 3 days | ×1.1 |
| 7 days | ×1.25 |
| 14 days | ×1.5 |
| 28 days | ×2 |
L.U.R.E. bonds multiply it further. So does the H.A.B.S. subvention, paid out of a fund citizens capitalize themselves, “for as long as the fund stands.” When the subvention was enacted, the multipliers compounded to a ceiling of Ⱡ4,000 a day. Your ledger shows Earned Today, everything since midnight UTC.
Seven days without a claim triggers the dormancy tax. Stay away for five weeks and S.L.U.S.H. starts on your shares.
Betting
Section titled “Betting”Odds come from O.D.D.S.. Wagers are underwritten by B.U.T., the Bets Underwriting Team.
Game markets
Section titled “Game markets”Every game has a market. It closes at the scheduled puck drop:
The puck has dropped. This market is closed.
Standings markets
Section titled “Standings markets”Two season-long markets per team: Finishes #1 in Conference, and Participates in Playoffs (top eight in the conference). After every matchday, O.D.D.S. runs the rest of the season five thousand times and resets the line. A taken line holds. The market closes when the final regular-season matchday starts.
Run Deep
Section titled “Run Deep”The playoff market. It opens with the quarterfinals, once the field of sixteen is known; there is no market on the Wildcard. Standing bets on making the playoffs settle when the quarterfinal field is revealed—the record is kept by the bracket, not by the table. One per qualifying team, with a rung for each round it might survive: Reach Semi-Finals, Reach Conference Finals, Reach Final, Champion. Each rung pays more than the last.
Since 7 October 2026, a team’s tickets lock when its series faces off and reopen once it is decided. The board marks the team Series on and the line Locked. B.U.T. amended the terms in the same notice that reported The Jambono’s second pass:
B.U.T. underwrites what it can see coming. B.U.T. did not see this coming.
Settlement
Section titled “Settlement”Since the close of Season 3’s third matchday, a wager is graded at the horn, but the Looneys wait. Every wager on the day settles together once the day’s last game has finished. Tickets read “Settles at the close of the matchday.” B.U.T. said plainly that it was built for a league that went to bed. This one no longer does.
The Ledger
Section titled “The Ledger”“Le Council observes all wagers. Le Council forgets nothing.” Every wager placed in Hockay is on a public log, filterable by fan, status and market. This Week in Hockay carries a weekly Note From O.D.D.S. on what the book won and lost.
O.D.D.S.—the official source
Section titled “O.D.D.S.—the official source”The Office of Data-Driven Speculation publishes every game’s odds. Their methodology is transparent, mathematical, and boring. They are proud of this.
Odds shift after every completed game as fresh results come in, so a team’s odds on their next scheduled game can tighten or lengthen throughout the evening. A rivalry game and the day of the week both move the line.
They are sometimes wrong. This is by design. If the odds were always right, there would be no upsets, and without upsets there would be no stories, and without stories there would be no Hockay. Only Ice.
O.M.E.N.—not affiliated
Section titled “O.M.E.N.—not affiliated”O.M.E.N. publishes alternative forecasts based on “reasonating” with The Almighty Ice. NOT affiliated with LPCHUIP. NOT recognized. NOT endorsed. O.M.E.N. is sometimes wildly wrong. O.M.E.N. is sometimes unsettlingly accurate. Use at your own risk.
