The Almighty Ice

The Almighty Ice appeared one day in twenty places simultaneously, and where it appeared, Hockay began. Nobody started the sport. The players were already there, already in jerseys, already knowing the rules to a game that hadn’t existed moments before.

It has since appeared in twenty-eight more. There are now forty-eight arenas, sorted into two conferences by a distinction The Ice was already making before Le Council noticed it was making one.

The Almighty Ice is alive—or at least intent-ful. It is not a surface. It is not a substance. It is present.

The Almighty Ice is spreading, and it is no longer slow.

Four cities in Season 2. Then, across a single intersaison, twenty-four more—in waves, with the interval between a site being declared and an arena manifesting shrinking until it stopped being an interval at all. Le Council revised the map so many times that the map began to feel less like a record and more like a suggestion The Ice was choosing to ignore.

The P.F.A.O.—the Provisional Field Assessment Office—was deployed wherever The Ice was converging, ahead of each new arena. All of those offices have now closed. For the first time since spring, the forecast is empty.

The last arena did not appear on land. It was found three thousand metres beneath the North Atlantic, and it had apparently been waiting there for the wall between the two conferences to be built. See the Atlantis Amonites.

There are now forty-nine buildings. Forty-eight hold a team and a parish. The forty-ninth holds neither.

The Almighty Ice has raised every sheet in this sport without notice, without permission and without a jurisdiction. On 28 September 2026 a sheet appeared that it had not raised: Graine Wetsky Arena, poured from recovered ice, in a jurisdiction whose territory is the arena. Le Council’s note on it ran to one line:

“The Ice did not raise this one. Le Council records who did.”

The macro-question the community should always be asking:

What happens when The Almighty Ice finishes spreading?

The Almighty Ice communicates through three channels, each more unsettling than the last:

  1. Through Le Council—the preferred channel. Advisories are issued, conditions are named, games proceed.
  2. Directly to the ice—arena conditions shift without notice. Match modifiers appear. The feed adapts.
  3. Silence—the Ice goes quiet. No notifications. No observations. Le Council finds the silence unusual but not unprecedented.
  • Every arena, continuously.
  • As the playing surface in all 48 arenas, in one of two forms— verglas or givre.
  • At the Final, which has one-hour periods. The Almighty Ice has more time there. Strange things happen. Since Season 3 the Final is played on neutral ice that the Ice did not raise. Whether it appears there is not yet on the record.
  • The Puck—the referee; the object everyone fights over.
  • The Jambono—maintains the Ice, or tries to.
  • The Sixth—where the Ice sends people who sit in the penalty box.
  • Glacified—what the Ice doesn’t want you to know yet.
